The presentation often helps administrations realize their own departments shortcomings and it gives them an understanding of where to start fixing their own program.

Who Will Be Our Champions? Creating a Culture of Empowerment thru Education
I/C Category: 1.5 Educational Administration

The future of EMS is defined by complex challenges.  From reimbursement reform to staff shortages to integration of new technology, solutions to our most complicated problems will only be found by those courageous enough to disrupt, innovate, and create.  But where will these leaders come from?  Rather than empowering the outlier, our culture far too often shuns the nonconformist, silences the novel idea, and at worst, devalues its own diversity. Upon completion of the session, participants will have a much better understanding of the linkage between the culture of public safety and its ability to recruit and retain its members.  More importantly, they will better understand how educators impact the development of this culture.

In the State of Michigan, EMT pass rates are below the national average.  We must take a very intentional look at our teaching methods and look for strategies to better engage our students.  Research shows that a hands-on or kinesthetic approach improves long-term memory, classroom engagement, and participation.

Public safety professionals are often defined by "that one moment."  The moments that make or break careers are more commonly simple opportunities to do right.  How will students know right from wrong and more importantly, how will they know when it’s time to raise their voice when their moment is at hand?  This session will suggest that these capabilities are defined in core education and in the culture that education creates.  We will discuss the characteristics necessary to act during these moments and focus on key topics including teamwork, self-examination, personal accountability, and evaluating the affective domain.  Most importantly, we will describe best practices to integrate these core values into your lesson plan.

Have you ever been frustrated talking to someone else? Think that you are talking a different language, or from a different world? Often while working in the EMS realm we have been trained and are focused on gathering information as quickly as possible and do not take time to realize how we sound or come across. This creates stress on those we are interacting with, whether in an EMS setting or not, as well as ourselves. Attendee will leave the seminar with tools to assist in identifying their preferred communication style along with tools to help identify how others look to receive information and ways to improve communication with others (even spouses......well maybe).

EMS providers are given a small insight into various job opportunities within Emergency Medicine with an even smaller emphasis based on flight medicine and transport.  While the main focus on flight is on the trauma scene response, this only accounts for 30% of all transports.  70% of transports are medical, inter-facility, or specialty transports that most EMS providers are not currently aware of.  This presentation will enable instructors to relay up to date information and a more in depth look into what a flight paramedic/nurse are trained for and what their job actually entails.
